Beyond STEM: Learning to Solve What Matters

Last year, a senior I looked up to attended the Yale Young Global Scholars program and shared her exciting experience and how much she enjoyed the program. She described YYGS as a learning experience where ideas flowed, friendships developed across borders, and learning extended far beyond the classroom. I decided to get into the program to enrich myself with global experience.

I had initially planned to attend the STEM track since that’s the area where I am most comfortable, and I’ve been fascinated with Data Science and its possibilities for a long time. But my favorite teacher, who teaches AP chemistry, implored me to step out of my academic comfort zone. She believed that if channeled by purpose, curiosity can lead to unexpected growth. Her advice led me to choose the Global Challenges track.

At YYGS, I look forward to connecting with other students from around the world and exploring how data science can be used to address the world’s most pressing issues today, whether climate change, inequality, or public health. With new advancements in data science, we can solve problems that were previously thought to be unsolvable. YYGS offers the perfect platform to test that hypothesis and grow into the kind of global citizen I aspire to be.
